About

The present wall was built in the fourteenth century under the first Ming emperor, on foundations of the Tang imperial city. Its broad top, lined with watchtowers and gate towers, runs for around fourteen kilometres, and cycling or walking along it gives a wonderful view of the city inside and out.

Best time to go: Rent a bicycle on the ramparts in the late afternoon and ride the full circuit before sunset.
