About
The collection began in the eleventh century to protect the Kaicheng Stone Classics, Confucian texts carved in stone in the ninth century. It now holds thousands of steles, including the celebrated Nestorian Stele recording early Christianity in China, and masterpieces of calligraphy from the greatest hands.
Best time to go: Allow time for the rubbing workshops, where craftsmen take ink copies of the ancient inscriptions.
