About
Designed by James Hoban and first occupied by John Adams, the house was burned by British troops in 1814 and restored afterwards. Its white-painted sandstone facade and columns are among the most recognised images in the world. Public tours are limited and must be requested well ahead, but the views from the surrounding parks are available to all.
Best time to go: View it from Lafayette Square to the north or from the Ellipse to the south, as public tours are limited.
