About
Construction started in 1848 but was halted for years by a lack of funds and the Civil War, which is why the colour of the stone changes about a third of the way up. Completed in 1884, it was briefly the tallest structure in the world. A lift carries visitors to an observation level with views over the Mall and the Potomac.
Best time to go: Reserve timed tickets for the lift to the top, and go on a clear day for views across the city.
