About
Founded in 1937 with a gift from the financier Andrew Mellon, the gallery occupies a neoclassical West Building and a sharp-angled East Building designed by I. M. Pei. The collection runs from Italian Renaissance masterpieces, including Leonardo's Ginevra de' Benci, to Impressionism and modern art. A sculpture garden sits beside the Mall.
Best time to go: Start in the West Building for the old masters, then cross underground to the modern works in the East Building.
