About
Construction began in 1793, and the building was burned by British troops in 1814 before being rebuilt and expanded. The cast-iron dome was completed during the Civil War. Tours from the visitor centre lead through the Rotunda, with its ceiling fresco, and the old Hall of the House, now filled with statues.
Best time to go: Reserve a free guided tour in advance, and pair it with the Library of Congress across the street.
