About
Dedicated in 1922, the memorial was modelled on a Greek temple, with thirty-six columns representing the states of the Union at Lincoln's death. Inside, Daniel Chester French's vast seated statue of Lincoln is flanked by the words of the Gettysburg Address and his second inaugural address. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his I Have a Dream speech from its steps in 1963.
Best time to go: Visit at night, when the monument is lit and the view down the Reflecting Pool is at its most striking.
