About
Built in the first century AD, when Verona was a flourishing Roman town, the Arena is one of the best-preserved amphitheatres of the ancient world. Only a fragment of its outer ring survived a twelfth-century earthquake, but the inner tiers are almost complete. Since 1913 its summer opera festival has filled the stands with thousands of spectators under the night sky.
Best time to go: Visit in the morning when the stone tiers are empty, or book a summer evening at the opera.
