About
The della Scala family ruled Verona in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and they chose to be buried in the open air beside their parish church of Santa Maria Antica. Their tombs rise in tiers of carved canopies and pinnacles behind wrought-iron railings patterned with the family's ladder emblem. Cangrande I's equestrian statue, now a copy, tops his tomb above the church door.
Best time to go: Look through the wrought-iron railings on the way to Piazza dei Signori, just a few steps away.
