About

The bridge was built by the Romans in the first century BC and carried the road into the city for more than two thousand years. Retreating German troops blew it up in 1945, and in the 1950s it was carefully reassembled using many of the original blocks recovered from the river. Its mix of white stone and red brick records centuries of repairs.

Best time to go: Cross at sunset, then climb the steps on the far bank to Castel San Pietro for the view back.
