About
Cangrande II della Scala built the castle in the 1350s as a stronghold beside the Adige, linked to the far bank by the fortified Ponte Scaligero. In the mid-twentieth century the architect Carlo Scarpa transformed it into a museum whose display of sculpture and painting is admired as much as the collection itself. The bridge, destroyed in 1945, was rebuilt from its original stones.
Best time to go: Allow a couple of hours for the museum, then walk out onto the Ponte Scaligero for the river views.
