About
Founded around the turn of the eighth century, the Zitouna, or Mosque of the Olive, owes its present form largely to a ninth-century rebuilding that reused many antique columns from Carthage. Additions and restorations have followed ever since. The mosque grew into a centre of higher learning, today the University of Ez-Zitouna, and from the thirteenth century it was Tunisia's most important educational institution.
Best time to go: Dress modestly and visit outside prayer times; the souks around it are busiest in the late morning.
