About
Bab el Bhar, meaning gate of the sea and also known as the Porte de France, stands on the eastern side of the medina of Tunis. It marks the line between the old walled city and the grid of the modern town built beyond it. The gate has been altered many times, and today it takes the form of a single archway crowned by a crenellated parapet. It is the natural starting point for a walk into the souks.
Best time to go: Start here and follow the main lane uphill into the souks and on to the Zitouna Mosque.
