About

Named after Habib Bourguiba, Tunisia's first president and the leader of its independence movement, the avenue is the political and economic heart of the capital. Its broad central promenade is lined with trees, shops and pavement cafés, and it is often compared with the Champs-Élysées. It runs east towards the Lake of Tunis, while its extension, Avenue de France, leads west to the medina.

Best time to go: Walk it in the early evening, when locals come out for coffee and a stroll under the trees.
