About

A World Heritage Site since 1979, the medina is the historic heart of Tunis. Within its walls and gates lie around 700 monuments, from palaces and mosques to mausoleums, madrasas and fountains built over many centuries. Its souks were traditionally arranged by trade, with the Al-Zaytuna Mosque at the centre of the network. It is best explored slowly and on foot.

Best time to go: Enter through Bab el Bhar in the morning, when the souks open, and let yourself get a little lost.
