About
The present bridge dates from 1861, replacing earlier crossings that led to the city's eastern defences. Its red timber portals are known locally as the Gate of Happiness. From the bridge you see the old warehouses on stilts that line both banks of the river, painted in ochres, reds and whites.
Best time to go: Cross it in the evening light for the classic view of the colourful wharf warehouses along the river.
