About
Bakklandet grew up in the seventeenth century as a suburb of workers, fishermen and craftsmen outside the city limits. Its timber houses were saved from demolition in the 1960s and 1970s and now hold cafés, bookshops and studios. The bicycle lift on the steep street of Brubakken, which pushes cyclists uphill, is a local curiosity.
Best time to go: Wander the cobbled lanes on a sunny afternoon and stop in one of the small cafés for coffee and cake.
