Once the palace of French kings, the Louvre became a public museum in 1793. You cannot see it all: choose a wing. Beyond the Mona Lisa, look for the Winged Victory of Samothrace and the medieval moat under the palace.
Best time to go: Book a timed entry; Wednesday and Friday evenings are quieter.
