About

Founded in the late eighth and early ninth centuries by the Idrisid dynasty, Fes el-Bali is one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thousands of alleys lead past coppersmiths, weavers, spice sellers and hidden fountains, and donkeys and handcarts still carry goods through lanes too narrow for anything else.

Best time to go: Hire a licensed guide for your first morning, then return alone to wander once you know the main lanes.
