About
Fatima al-Fihri, a merchant's daughter from Kairouan, founded the Qarawiyyin in the ninth century, and later dynasties enlarged it into one of the great mosques of North Africa. Its teaching drew scholars from across the Mediterranean, and its library holds manuscripts of great age. The green-tiled roofs are best appreciated from surrounding terraces.
Best time to go: Non-Muslims cannot enter, but a glance through the open doors reveals the courtyard and its fountains.
