About
Founded in the fourteenth century, Wat Mahathat was one of the most important monasteries of the kingdom and held relics of the Buddha. Its central prang has collapsed, but rows of headless Buddhas and brick chedis remain, and a sandstone head gradually enveloped by the roots of a fig tree has become the defining image of Ayutthaya.
Best time to go: Crouch or kneel when photographing the Buddha head in the tree, keeping your head below it.
