About
An older synagogue on this site was destroyed during the French bombardment of 1798, and the present building was completed in the mid-nineteenth century. Its lofty interior of marble columns, chandeliers and brass nameplates on the seats evokes cosmopolitan Alexandria. After a major restoration, it reopened to visitors in 2020.
Best time to go: Bring your passport, as security checks are thorough, and visit on a weekday.
