About
Carved in the second century AD, the catacombs descend by a spiral staircase to several levels of tombs, chapels and a banqueting hall for mourners. The main tomb chamber mixes Egyptian gods with Roman dress and Greek architectural forms, a vivid picture of Alexandria's mixed culture. The site was rediscovered by chance at the start of the twentieth century.
Best time to go: Combine it with Pompey's Pillar nearby, and bring a light layer for the cool underground chambers.
