About
Despite its name, the column has nothing to do with Pompey: it was raised around AD 300 in honour of the emperor Diocletian. Cut from a single piece of Aswan granite, it stands about 27 metres high on the hill where the great temple of Serapis once stood. Sphinxes and underground galleries from the temple survive around it.
Best time to go: Visit in the morning, then walk to the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa a short distance away.
