About
The street is named after the shelves on which butchers displayed their meat, and some shopfronts still have the old hooks and sills. The upper storeys lean so far over the lane that neighbours could nearly touch across it, and the adjoining Shambles Market is good for local food.
Best time to go: Walk it early in the morning to enjoy the timbered houses before the shops open.
