About
Emperor Charles VI vowed to build the church during the plague of 1713, and Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach designed it. Its dome and the two spiral-carved columns inspired by Trajan's Column in Rome make a striking facade, and a panoramic lift rises inside the dome to the frescoes.
Best time to go: Visit in the evening when the dome is lit and reflected in the pool on Karlsplatz.
