About
The great halls were built to raise and support the imperial rooms above, and they mirror the layout of the lost apartments exactly. For centuries they were filled with rubble and refuse, which helped preserve them until excavation in the twentieth century. The central passage now hums with craft stalls, while the quieter side halls reveal the scale of Roman engineering.
Best time to go: Enter from the seafront promenade and walk through the central hall up to the Peristyle.
