About

The emperor Diocletian built this fortified retirement palace around AD 300, and after the fall of Rome people from nearby Salona moved inside its walls. Its streets, courtyards, temples and cellars are now filled with homes, shops and cafes, making it one of the most remarkable Roman monuments anywhere.

Best time to go: Explore the lanes early in the morning, and visit the cellars to understand the layout.
