About
Scholars disagree on exactly when the ribat was founded, but it most likely dates from the eighth century and was rebuilt or completed in its present form in the early ninth century under the Aghlabids. Many such fortified outposts once guarded this coast, yet the Ribat of Sousse is by far the best preserved. Its thick walls and inner courtyard stand at the heart of the medina, a short walk from the Great Mosque.
Best time to go: Visit early, before the tour groups arrive, then walk the few steps to the Great Mosque.
