About
The Great Mosque was begun in 851 under the Aghlabid dynasty, which ruled on behalf of the Abbasid caliphs, and was commissioned by the emir Abu al-Abbas Muhammad. It is a major example of Aghlabid architecture from the early Islamic period. Over the following centuries its prayer hall was renovated and extended several times. It stands a few steps from the ribat, and together the two anchor the medina.
Best time to go: Visit in the morning and dress modestly; visitors are welcome outside prayer times.
