About
Listed by UNESCO in 1988, the medina of Sousse is a textbook example of how towns were built in the Maghreb during the early centuries of Islam. Its fortifications enclose the kasbah, the ribat and the Great Mosque, and the kasbah now holds the city's archaeological museum. Punic stelae found between the ribat and the mosque show how deep the history of this site runs.
Best time to go: Walk the lanes in the morning, then circle the outside of the walls in the late afternoon.
