About

Hadrumetum began as a Phoenician colony and is older than Carthage. Under Rome it became one of the most important cities of the province of Africa, before Vandal and Umayyad conquests left it in ruins. In the early modern period the site was the village of Hammeim, now part of Sousse. Punic stelae have been found during excavations at the site of the Catholic church of Notre-Dame de l'Immaculée-Conception.

Best time to go: Look for its mosaics and funerary finds in the Archaeological Museum, which holds much of what has been excavated.
