About

After Florence conquered Siena, Cosimo I de' Medici had this fortress built in the 1560s to keep the city under control. Its massive brick bastions were never needed for war, and today the walls are planted with trees and open to walkers. It is a peaceful place for a stroll, with views towards the cathedral and the countryside.

Best time to go: Walk the ramparts in the late afternoon, when locals come for a stroll and the light softens.
