About
Built mainly in the thirteenth century, the cathedral dazzles with black and white marble bands inside and out. Its floor is covered with inlaid marble scenes made over two centuries, and Nicola Pisano carved the octagonal pulpit. A vast extension begun in the fourteenth century was abandoned after the Black Death, leaving an unfinished facade that can be climbed for the view.
Best time to go: Come between late June and mid-October, outside early August, when the full marble floor is usually uncovered.
