About

Jacopo della Quercia carved the fountain's reliefs in the early fifteenth century, celebrating the arrival of water in the city's main square through a network of underground channels. The weathered originals were replaced by copies in the nineteenth century. The name, meaning joyful fountain, is said to recall the celebrations when water first flowed here.

Best time to go: Look at it on your way across the Campo, then see the original carvings at Santa Maria della Scala.
