About
For the best part of a thousand years this vast complex cared for pilgrims, the sick and abandoned children, and it remained a hospital until the late twentieth century. Its Pellegrinaio is painted with fifteenth-century scenes of hospital life. The original panels of Jacopo della Quercia's Fonte Gaia are kept here, and the lower floors hold the archaeological museum.
Best time to go: Head first to the Pellegrinaio, the frescoed pilgrims' hall, then explore the lower levels.
