About
Designed by the office of Ramos de Azevedo and opened in 1933, the Mercadão is a grand hall of fruit, spices, cheeses and cured meats. Its stained-glass windows depict scenes of Brazilian farming, and the mezzanine restaurants serve the towering mortadella sandwiches that have become a local legend.
Best time to go: Arrive hungry and try the famous mortadella sandwich and a pastel de bacalhau at the upper-floor counters.
