About

The Registan was the heart of the Timurid Empire and later the city's commercial, educational and ceremonial centre. Three madrasas enclose it: the Ulugh Beg Madrasa of the Timurid period, and the Sherdar and Tilakari madrasas added under the Janid dynasty. Their soaring portals, turquoise domes and geometric tilework rank among the finest achievements of Islamic architecture in Central Asia. It is the single image most people associate with Samarkand.

Best time to go: See it twice: in the soft light of early morning, and again after dark when the three facades are floodlit.
