About

In the 15th century the Bibi-Khanym Mosque was one of the largest and most magnificent mosques in the Islamic world. It is considered a masterpiece of the Timurid Renaissance and one of the most important monuments in Samarkand. By the middle of the 20th century only a vast ruin survived. Much of it was restored during the Soviet period, and its huge portal and domes again dominate the old town.

Best time to go: Visit in the morning and then walk straight on to the Siyob Bazaar next door.
