About
The Afrasiab Museum stands on the site of Afrasiyab, the ancient city that preceded Samarkand and was destroyed by the Mongols in the early 13th century. The site is one of the largest archaeological sites in the world. Its name comes from Afrasiab, the mythical king and hero of Turan. The permanent exhibition covers the history of the city and region, in a building designed in 1970 by Bagdasar Arzumanyan.
Best time to go: Go in the morning, and walk a little of the open site around the museum to grasp the scale of the old city.
