About

Built by the Franciscans in the first half of the eighteenth century, the church dazzles with gilded carvings of cherubs, vines and saints that cover walls and ceiling. The adjoining cloister is lined with Portuguese tile panels illustrating moral themes, making the complex one of the high points of colonial art in the Americas.

Best time to go: Visit in the morning and spend time in the cloister to study the blue-and-white azulejo panels.
