The market occupies the nineteenth-century customs building by the port, rebuilt after fires in the twentieth century. Its stalls sell lace, carvings, musical instruments such as the berimbau and colourful fitas do Bonfim, while restaurants upstairs look across the bay to the fort of São Marcelo.
