Named after the pillory where enslaved Africans were once publicly punished, the square lies at the centre of the Historic Centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its restored colonial facades house music schools, cafés and museums, including the Jorge Amado foundation, and the rhythm of Afro-Brazilian drum groups is never far away.
