About
Built by the Jesuits in the seventeenth century, the church became the cathedral after the Society was expelled from Brazil. Its facade is of stone imported from Portugal, and inside are gilded altarpieces and a sacristy with a ceiling of painted panels; the preacher António Vieira once spoke from its pulpit.
Best time to go: Look in as you cross Terreiro de Jesus, and linger over the painted sacristy ceiling.
