About

Opened in 1982 by the Federal University of Bahia, the museum explores the African roots of Bahian life through sculpture, textiles, ritual objects and musical instruments. Its highlight is a series of large carved cedar panels by the artist Carybé depicting the orixás of Candomblé, the religion brought to Bahia by enslaved Africans.

Best time to go: Visit while exploring Terreiro de Jesus, and leave time for Carybé's carved panels of the orixás.
