About
In the Middle Ages this was the political centre of the Pisan republic. In the sixteenth century Cosimo I de' Medici chose it as the seat of his new order of knights, and Giorgio Vasari rebuilt its palaces. The Palazzo della Carovana, with its decorated facade, now houses the Scuola Normale Superiore, one of Italy's most selective universities.
Best time to go: Come in the evening, when students gather on the steps and the sgraffito facade is floodlit.
