About
Work on the tower began in the twelfth century, and it started to tilt once the second storey was built on unstable soil. Construction paused for decades and it took almost two centuries to finish. Engineers reduced the lean around the turn of the twenty-first century, making it safe to climb the spiral stairs to the bells at the top.
Best time to go: Book a timed climb in advance and come early or late in the day, when the light and crowds are kinder.
