About
St Ambrose, bishop of Milan, founded the basilica in the late fourth century, and his remains still lie in the crypt. The present Romanesque church, with its arcaded atrium and two contrasting bell towers, holds a glittering golden altar of the ninth century and early Christian mosaics.
Best time to go: Visit on a quiet weekday morning and linger in the atrium before stepping inside.
