About
A Famosa was the fortress the Portuguese built after taking Malacca, begun around 1512. Its name came from its five-storey keep, which the Dutch later destroyed while enlarging the outer walls. In 1811 the British demolished nearly all that remained. Only the Porta de Santiago gateway and the rebuilt Middelburg Bastion survive, and the gateway is now one of the most photographed sights in the city.
Best time to go: Combine it with the walk up St Paul's Hill, which starts from the gateway.
