About

Merdeka Square was once the Padang, the playing field of the Selangor Club, and it still has the open green of a colonial cricket ground. At midnight on 31 August 1957 the Union Flag came down here and the flag of independent Malaya went up for the first time. The square now hosts the annual Independence Day Parade. The Sultan Abdul Samad Building lines one side, making this the natural starting point for a walk through old Kuala Lumpur.

Best time to go: Come in the early evening, when the heat eases and the buildings around the green light up.
